Handling Life’s Stressors - Fear of dentists, barking dogs, barking bosses

By Cabo writer David Mandich for Mexico Dentist Guide.

Avoiding stress seems an impossible challenge as we can seem overwhelmed with many kinds of stress – parenting, marital, life-changes such as getting married, divorce, death in the family, test-taking, a new job, losing a job, moving, losing your home, mall-stress, paying with plastic stress, organizational stress, holiday season stress, driving stress, getting a traffic ticket, losing your temper, perfectionism and a biggie – fear of doctors and dentists.

Especially dentists – the guys with those needles as big as your arm they stick in your mouth when you’re not looking. The list of stressors in modern life seems endless.

But there are many ways to cope with stress. Many you already know, some that may surprise you. And I’m not just talking Cuban cigars, margaritas and salsa dancing in Mexico. To lower your stress level - first identify the cause(s) of your anxieties.

What in your life is causing those headaches, backaches, light-headedness, upset stomach, racing heart, nervous tics, insomnia, weight-gain, hyper-tension, the road rage, angina attacks, phobias etc. What is it (or who is it) in your life that is making you so unhappy?

Sometimes stress is caused by poor diet, lack of exercise and sleep – all easily remedied. I’m not going to tell you to get 7 hours sleep, to stop eating all that fat, sugar, salt and consuming that liter of single malt whiskey every day for breakfast – you’ve heard it all before. And I’m not going to tell you to walk a mile on the beach every day.  Or file for divorce.

I’m not going to wear you out with those tired but true stress relievers. But it helps a lot to leave for work ten minutes earlier, to be nice to your spouse, lay off the sauce and to ditch the credit cards for starters.

Drown your stress.  Tequila used to be the sedative of choice in Mexico prior to the 19th century for dentists, doctors and the common drunk. It was whiskey in the US. Sedative spirits based on the cactus date back to before the Aztecs. Tequila (the Aztecs used a cruder version called ‘pulque’ was tightly controlled by the ancient authorities. Only the elderly, royalty and sacrificial victims were given the stress relieving libation.

Other solutions to stress can include natural herbs, meditation, prayer (praying for money usually doesn’t work), music, reading, aromatherapy and my favorite (I’ve been practicing for years and didn’t realize it) – cooking. Becoming an iron chef combines mild physical therapy, a creative distraction from your stressors, aromatherapy and ideally, proper diet.

So - head for the mercado with your woven fiber Mexican shopping bag and buy as much natural, raw, unprocessed produce, fresh meats and fish as you can. Mexican food in general is quite healthful being high in fiber, carbs, proteins and natural vitamins. Buy a good Mexican food cookbook or join a cooking class. Get to know chili’s. There are dozens of varieties and they are loaded with vitamins and anti-virus killers.

Remember the movie – Little Shop of Horrors?  Actor Steve Martin  played the dentist who gassed himself with laughing gas (nitros oxide) before working on the patient. The reality is – the gas turns up at concerts and auto racing events sold illegally in balloons and repeated usage causes symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. Nitrous Oxide is tightly controlled in Mexico by the health authorities.

Medical or dental office visits rank high on the list of stressors. Some people won’t visit a dentist until their teeth and gums are so rotten there is nothing left to do for the dentist but extract them. Often the person suffered for months or years needlessly due to their fear of the dentist. And all they needed to prevent the tooth, gum disease or bone loss was routine checkups.

People often fear a dentist because they are in pain, fear the pain of the treatment, and fear having to pay for it. If you are one of these people – you are not alone as it’s estimated 10% of the population have some form of dental anxiety or phobia.

Though Mexican dentists no longer use Jose’ Cuervo shots to alleviate pain, they now have many other ways of getting the job done painlessly from drill-less sonic cleanings to simple sedations given orally and sleep dentistry. Sleep or Sedation dentistry can be with injections or via an IV administered by a Dr. of Anesthesiology. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is only permitted in hospitals in Mexico due to strict drug abuse controls.

If you are having a treatment requiring advanced dental procedures such as a root canal, crown, oral surgery or dental implant – be sure to use a certified dentist. A certified dentist in Mexico costs the same as a general dentist in Mexico and has 2-4 additional years of training, so your dental work has the greatest chance of success.

With a certified dentist, you can be treated by highly-skilled professional who is familiar with sedation or sleep dentistry options and alleviating the fears of anxious patients.

And remember, when in Mexico – a certified dentist costs the same as a less-trained general dentist, so you can afford the best dentists in Mexico.

A Dental Holiday in Mexico is one way to relieve dental anxiety.
